Enabling the SIR System

WARNING: The diagnostic energy reserve module or sensing and diagnostic module (DERM/SDM) can maintain enough voltage to cause air bag deployment for up to two minutes after the ignition switch is turned off and the battery is disconnected. Servicing the SIR system during this period may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.

1. Turn ignition key to the LOCK position and remove key.
2. Open glove compartment door and connect yellow 2-way connector and Connector Position Assurance (CPA).
3. Connect yellow 2-way connector at base of steering column, then install Connector Position Assurance (CPA).
4. Install trim panel under steering column.
5. Install AIR BAG fuse (1995-96 fuse 21) into instrument panel fuse block.
6. Turn ignition key to the RUN position and verify that the AIR BAG/INFLATABLE RESTRAINT warning lamp flashes seven times and then turns off. If lamp does not operate as specified, refer to System Diagnosis.
