Possible Causes

An AIR BAG warning light that is continuously illuminated may be caused by disconnected RCM, damaged battery or ignition circuit, loss of ground circuit to RCM, damaged wiring, terminals, or connectors, worn or damaged shorting bar or camming beam, inoperative RCM or damaged scan tool.

  1. Check for hard or intermittent DTC

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See USING SCAN TOOL  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. If continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to step  3 . If on-demand DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. If no DTCs were retrieved, go to next step.
  2. Check RCM connection

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Deactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Access RCM. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure RCM connector C310B is fully connected and Red clip is inserted. If RCM connector C310B is fully connected and Red clip is engaged, go to next step. If RCM connector C310B is not fully connected or Red clip is not engaged, repair/replace as necessary. Go to step  9 .
  3. Check RCM

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Deactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Access RCM and disconnect RCM connector C310B. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect component side of RCM connector C310B for worn or damaged camming beam. See Fig 1 . If camming beam is in good condition, go to next step. If camming beam is not in good condition, replace RCM. Go to step  9 .
  4. Check RCM harness connector

Inspect harness side of RCM connector C310B for worn or damaged shorting bar. If shorting bar is in good condition, go to next step. If shorting bar is not in good condition, repair or replace connector. Go to step  9 .
  5. Check ignition circuit for open

Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and RCM connector C310B, terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue/Light Green wire, circuit No. 964). See Fig 2 . If voltage is 9-16 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 9-16 volts, repair open in Dark Blue/Light Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  9 .
  6. Check ground circuit for open

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and RCM connector C310B, terminal No. 10 (Black wire, circuit No. 57). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire. Go to step  9 .
  7. Check circuit for short to ground

Reconnect RCM harness connector C310B. On models with analog instrument cluster, access instrument cluster and disconnect instrument cluster module harness connector C2220B. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On models with digital instrument cluster, access instrument cluster and disconnect warning light module harness connector C2222, located near instrument cluster. On models with analog instrument cluster, measure resistance between ground and harness side of instrument cluster module connector C2220B, terminal No. 11 (Black/Yellow wire, circuit No. 608). See Fig 3 . On models with digital instrument cluster, measure resistance between ground and harness side of warning light module connector C2222, terminal No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire). See Fig 4 . On all models, if resistance is less than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one megohm, repair or replace instrument cluster. Go to step  9 .
  8. Check RCM for short to ground

Disconnect RCM harness connector C310B. Measure resistance between ground and component side of RCM connector C310B, pin No. 9. See Fig 5 . If resistance is less than one megohm, replace RCM and go to next step. If resistance is more than one megohm, repair open in Black/Yellow wire and go to next step.
  9. Check for additional DTCs

Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
