Possible Causes

Incorrect vehicle identification fault could be caused by damaged wiring, terminals or connectors, incorrect sensor for vehicle, incorrect Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS) for vehicle or incorrect RCM for vehicle.

  1. Check for hard or intermittent DTC

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See USING SCAN TOOL  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Retrieve and record any continuous DTCs. See RETRIEVING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform on-demand self-test. See ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under DIAGNOSTICS. Flag DTC C1414. See BIT-MAPPED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Retrieve and record any flagged faults. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, fault is hard. If flagged fault of "?" was recorded, multiple faults exist and entire test must be carried out.
    • RCM version conflicts with OCS module version, go to next step.
    • RCM version conflicts with hard wire vehicle identification, go to step  4 .
    • RCM version conflicts with front air bag sensor, go to step  6

If DTC C1414 was not retrieved, fault is intermittent. Go to step  9 .

  2. Visually inspect circuits

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access RCM and disconnect both connectors. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Access and disconnect OCS module harness connector C3159A. See OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR (OCS)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Visually inspect Dark Green/Violet and Dark Blue/Orange wires in OCS module harness connector and RCM connector C310A for damage, corrosion or dirt. Inspect component side of OCS module and RCM connectors damage, corrosion or dirt. If problems are found, repair as necessary. Go to step  10 . If no problems are found, go to next step.
  3. Check OCS part number

Check part number on OCS module against part number listen in master parts catalog. If part number on OCS module matches part number listed in master parts catalog, go to step  8 . If part number on OCS module does not match part number listed in master parts catalog, replace OCS system. Go to step  10 .
  4. Check for battery voltage

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access RCM and disconnect connector C310B. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310B, terminal No. 7 (Dark Blue/Light Green wire, circuit No. 964). See Figure . Voltage should be 9-16 volts. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310B, terminal No. 8 (Black wire, circuit No. 57). There should be measurable voltage. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair appropriate wire as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Go to step  10 .
  5. Check for ground

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310B, terminal No. 7 (Dark Blue/Light Green wire). Resistance should be more than one megohm. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of RCM connector C310B, terminal No. 8 (Black wire). Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to step  8 . If resistance is not as specified, repair appropriate wire as necessary. Go to step  10 .

Access and disconnect front air bag sensor harness connector. See FRONT AIR BAG SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Visually inspect Pink/Orange wire (circuit No. 617) and Violet/Light Green wire (circuit No. 618) in front air bag sensor harness connector and RCM connector C310A for damage, corrosion or dirt. Inspect component side of front air bag sensor and RCM connectors damage, corrosion or dirt. If problems are found, repair as necessary. Go to step  10 . If no problems are found, go to next step.
  7. Check front air bag sensor part number

Check part number on front air bag sensor against part number listen in master parts catalog. If part number on front air bag sensor matches part number listed in master parts catalog, go to next step. If part number on front air bag sensor does not match part number listed in master parts catalog, replace front air bag system. Go to step  10 .
  8. Check RCM part number

Check part number on RCM against part number listen in master parts catalog. If part number on RCM matches part number listed in master parts catalog, replace RCM with same part number. Go to step  10 . If part number on RCM does not match part number listed in master parts catalog, replace RCM with correct part number. Go to step  10 .
  9. Check for intermittent fault

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Perform on-demand self-test. If DTC C1414 was retrieved during on-demand self-test, go to step  1 . If DTC C1414 was not retrieved during on-demand self-test, check for cause of intermittent fault. Attempt to recreate fault by flexing wire harness and cycling ignition switch frequently. Repair any intermittent problems found. Go to next step.
  10. Check for additional DTCs

Refer to continuous DTCs recorded in step  1 . If any continuous DTCs were retrieved, go to diagnostic trouble code identification table for direction to appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. DO NOT clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. If no DTCs were retrieved, reconnect air bag system. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Clear all DTCs. See CLEARING FAULT CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS.
