Removal ("L" Series)

NOTE: On Saturn "L" models, it is necessary to discharge A/C system and remove compressor from vehicle to service clutch assembly.
NOTE: Tools Required: Puller Center (SA9149AC-2) and Drive Plate Installer (SA9149AC-3).
  1. Remove the compressor from the vehicle. See COMPRESSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SATURN - "L" MODELS article in MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS.
  2. Using a screwdriver to prevent drive plate from turning, remove the clutch drive plate bolt. See Figure.
    NOTE: Be careful not to lose the shims when removing the drive plate from the compressor shaft.
  3. Using a screwdriver with a thin blade, pry the drive plate off of the pulley. See Figure.
  4. Using external snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring. See Figure.
    NOTE: DO NOT remove pulley without puller adapter. If A/C compressor shaft is pressed on, A/C compressor will be damaged.
  5. Position the puller center on the end of the A/C compressor shaft. See Figure.
    NOTE: Ensure to hook the puller jaw behind the pulley only, not the coil.
  6. Install the 3-jaw puller on the A/C compressor pulley. Tighten the center bolt to remove the pulley assembly.
    NOTE: To enable easier removal of screws, lightly tap on the end of the screwdriver with a plastic hammer.
  7. Remove the A/C compressor clutch coil screws and remove the A/C compressor clutch coil. See Figure.
