Test F: Door Locks Operate Intermittently

NOTE: Perform all voltage and resistance tests using an Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
  1. Ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position. Remove door trim panel. See DOOR TRIM PANEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Lubricate door lock cylinder and door lock linkage. Ensure there is no interference around latch and linkage. If door locks still operate intermittently after lubrication, go to next step. If door locks operate correctly after lubrication, problem appears to be corrected. Operate door locks several times to verify reliability. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  2. Charge battery for 5-10 minutes. Operate door lock switches. If door locks do not operate after charging battery, go to next step. If door locks operate after charging battery, charge battery fully and perform battery and charging system test. See GENERATORS & REGULATORS - CROWN VICTORIA & GRAND MARQUIS article in ELECTRICAL.
  3. Check driver's door lock switch and door lock actuator and both components harness connector terminals. Harness connectors are located behind door trim panel. See Figure. Also check circuit breaker No. 7 (20-amp) connection in Battery Junction Box (BJB) located at right front of engine compartment. See Figure. If all harness connectors and terminals are secure and corrosion free, and circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. If any harness connectors, terminals, and/or circuit breaker are faulty, repair or replace components as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  4. Remove driver's and passenger's door lock switches, leaving harness connectors connected. See DOOR LOCK SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. While pressing door lock switch from lock to unlock, and wiggling door lock switch, backprobe and measure voltage between ground and passenger's door lock switch harness connector C629 terminal No. 7 (Pink/Orange wire). See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Also while pressing door lock switch from lock to unlock, and wiggling door lock switch, backprobe and measure voltage between ground and passenger's door lock switch harness connector C629 terminal No. 3 (Pink/Black wire). If door lock switches do not appear to be operating intermittently, system is operating properly at this time. If door lock switches appear to be operating intermittently, replace appropriate door lock switch. After repair, test system for normal operation.
