Test E: Door Locks Operate Only With Engine Running

NOTE: Perform all voltage and resistance tests using an Digital Volt-Ohm Meter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure voltage at battery positive terminals. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts less, perform battery and charging system test. See GENERATORS & REGULATORS - CROWN VICTORIA & GRAND MARQUIS article in ELECTRICAL.
  2. Manually lock and unlock door lock and check for binding or sticking lock. If door lock is not binding or sticking, go to next step. If door lock is binding or sticking, repair as necessary. After repair, test system for normal operation.
  3. Remove driver's door lock switch. See DOOR LOCK SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check harness connector for corroded, loose or damaged terminals. If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. If harness connector terminals are okay, no problem is indicated at this time. Retest system for normal operation.
