Description & Operation
Cruise control system is designed to maintain vehicle speed above 30 MPH. After ON switch is depressed, depressing SET/ACCEL switch will activate cruise control servo/actuator. To increase a set speed, either depress and hold for continuous acceleration, or momentarily tap SET/ACCEL switch for one MPH acceleration increments. To decrease a set speed, depress and hold COAST switch until target speed is reached, or momentarily tap COAST switch for one MPH deceleration increments. When cruise control system has been disabled by applying brake pedal, RESUME switch can be depressed and vehicle will return to original set speed if vehicle is traveling over 30 MPH and OFF switch has not been depressed.
Deactivator switch is provided as an additional safety feature. Normally, when brake pedal is depressed, an electrical signal from brake lamp circuit to cruise control servo/actuator will deactivate system. Under increased brake pedal effort, deactivator switch will open and remove power to cruise control servo/actuator, releasing throttle independently of cruise control servo/actuator. Air bag sliding contact provides electrical interface between steering column wiring and cruise control servo/actuator switches in steering wheel. Major components of the cruise control system are:
- Cruise control servo/actuator.
- Cruise control switches.
- Deactivator switch.
- Horn relay.
- Stoplight switch.
- Related wiring.
- Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
Inputs to cruise control servo are:
- Vehicle speed signal.
- Cruise control servo/actuator switch.
- Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch.
- Deactivator switch.
Outputs of cruise control servo are:
- Cruise control indicator (electronic cluster only).
- Cruise control servo/actuator cable controlling throttle position.
