BACKGROUND
During a transmission diagnosis, you can differentiate between acceptable levels of particles or debris in the automatic transmission by looking at the magnetic drain bolt and fluid strainer. Correct evaluation of any particle or debris found can help you determine if a transmission replacement is required or not.
INSPECTION
The following illustrations are examples of debris found during a transmission service:
Examples of Drain Bolts with an acceptable amount of metal particles
Due to normal wear on the transmission, the drain bolt will carry a specific amount of metallic powder on its magnet.
This does not indicate metal in the fluid and does NOT require a transmission replacement .
Examples of Drain Bolts with an EXCESSIVE amount of metal particles
Fragments of metal indicate possible internal transmission damage. These drain bolts would be evidence of metal in fluid and should be considered for a replacement transmission.
