EDITOR'S NOTE: This article replaces "Concentrated Sunlight Can Melt Plastic Body Parts and Trim Pieces," posted in June 2011 .
Do you have a vehicle with some plastic body parts or interior trim pieces looking like they were zapped by a ray gun? What you're seeing are the effects of concentrated sunlight. It's not a material quality issue.
Although it's rare, concentrated sunlight forms when sunlight reflecting off the glass of a nearby building focuses into an intense beam. Think of it like focusing a magnifying glass. This beam is hot enough to fry heavy-duty materials such as residential vinyl siding as well as plastic parts on automobiles.
Typical damage will look like rows or strips of melted or wrinkled paint on large body parts, while smaller trim pieces will look warped or melted.
Keep in mind this sort of damage is strictly environmental and isn't covered by warranty.
