Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    1. Start the engine and test drive the vehicle.
    2. Drive the vehicle at a steady speed between 60 km/h (37.3 mph) and 120 km/h (74.6 mph) long enough for MDS mode to become active.
    3. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.

Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

Are there any MDS Control circuit or oil pressure system related DTCs active or pending?

      Yes

      • Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s) before continuing with this test procedure. Refer to DTC INDEX .

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE OPERATION OF MDS 1
    NOTE:

MDS 1 controls the oil flow for deactivation of the Intake Lifters for both cylinders 2 and 3. If only one of the cylinders is setting a performance DTC, the most probable cause is a restriction in oil passage to the lifter or the lifter itself.

    1. With the scan tool actuate the MDS 1.

Can you feel and hear the solenoid actuating?

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

      • Replace MDS 1. When the solenoid is removed, check for any debris that may be blocking the oil passages to the solenoid. If the passages are clogged, clean the passages before replacing the MDS.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  4. CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE MDS 2
    NOTE:

MDS 2 controls the oil flow for deactivation of the Exhaust Lifters for both cylinders 2 and 3. If only one of the cylinders is setting a performance DTC, the most probable cause is a restriction in oil passage to the lifter or the lifter itself.

    1. With the scan tool actuate the MDS 2.

Can you feel and hear the solenoid actuating?

      Yes

      • Go To  5

      No

      • Replace MDS 2.
  5. CHECK THE OIL PASSAGES FOR RESTRICTIONS
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the Intake Manifold in accordance with the Service Information.
    3. Remove MDS 1 and MDS 2.
    4. Remove the Bank 1 Cylinder Head in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
    5. Remove the lifters from cylinders 2 and 3.
    6. Check for a restriction in the oil passages to the solenoids and from the solenoids to the lifters.

      Are the passages blocked?

      Yes

      • Clean the oil passages as necessary. If the entire engine is restricted disassembly of the entire engine block may be necessary.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No
