Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    1. With the scan tool, read Powertrain Control Module 1 (PCM-1) DTCs and Freeze Frame Data and record on the repair order.
    2. Using the recorded Freeze Frame Data and the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    3. With the scan tool, read PCM-1 DTCs.

Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. CHECK THE (F343) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO THE IGNITION COILS
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the harness connectors for Ignition Coils 1, 2 and 3.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Check the voltage supply to the Ignition Coils.

Are all three Ignition Coils missing voltage supply?

      Yes

      • Check for an open Fuse F05. If the fuse is open check the (F343) ASD Relay Output circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit is shorted, repair the short to ground and replace the fuse. If the circuit is not shorted to ground, an Ignition Coil may be causing the excessive current draw. Inspect the Ignition Coils for an overheated appearance. If all coils look normal try disconnecting one coil at a time and running the engine while monitoring the fuse.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

No, only one or two coils missing voltage supply:

      • Repair the (F343) ASD Relay Output circuit for an open between the Ignition Coils and the splice in the (F343) ASD Relay Output circuit.

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE (K19) COIL CONTROL 1 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Ignition Control Module (ICM) C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (K19) Coil Control 1 circuit between the Ignition Coil harness connector and the ICM C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

      • Repair the (K19) Coil Control 1 circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  4. CHECK THE (K17) COIL CONTROL 2 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Measure the resistance of the (K17) Coil Control 2 circuit between the Ignition Coil harness connector and the ICM C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  5

      No

      • Repair the (K17) Coil Control 2 circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE (K10) COIL CONTROL 3 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Measure the resistance of the (K10) Coil Control 3 circuit between the Ignition Coil harness connector and the ICM C1 harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  6

      No

      • Repair the (K10) Coil Control 3 circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. REPLACE THE IGNITION COILS AND RETEST FOR DTC
    1. Replace the Bank 1 Ignition Coils in accordance with the Service Information.
    2. Connect the Ignition Control Module and Ignition Coil harness connectors.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    5. Using the Freeze Frame Data or When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle within the conditions that set the DTC.
    6. With the scan tool, read PCM-1 DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes

      • Go To  7

      No

      • Replacing the Ignition Control Module repaired the fault.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
    1. Disconnect all Ignition Control Module harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all Ignition Control Module harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
