Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR LEAKS AND DAMAGE
    WARNING:

The fuel system is under a constant pressure (even with the engine off). Before testing or servicing any fuel system hose, fitting, or line, the fuel system pressure must be released. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    NOTE:

Diagnose any Fuel Pump relay or Fuel Pump Control Module DTCs before continuing with this procedure.

    1. Visually inspect the low pressure fuel delivery system lines and connections for signs of damage or external leaks between the Fuel Tank and High Pressure Fuel Pump Assembly.

Is the low pressure system leaking or damaged?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To
  2. INSTALL A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE TO THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL LINE
    1. Turn the ignition off.
      WARNING:

The fuel system is under a constant pressure (even with the engine off). Before testing or servicing any fuel system hose, fitting, or line, the fuel system pressure must be released. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    2. Release the pressure in the low pressure fuel system  . Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE, 2.0L or FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE, 2.8L .
    3. Disconnect the Front Fuel Delivery line connector from the Fuel High Pressure Pump. Refer to LINES, FUEL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, 2.0LLINES, FUEL, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, 2.8L .
    4. Connect a Fuel Pressure Gauge in-line with the Front Fuel Delivery line and reconnect to the Fuel High Pressure Pump.

      Proceed

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE LOW FUEL PRESSURE
    1. Turn the ignition on.
      NOTE:

Make sure to purge all air from the supply line. It may be necessary to cycle the ignition off and on a couple times.

    2. Read the Fuel Pressure Gauge and record the reading.
      NOTE:

The fuel pressure specification is 450 kPa +/- 50 kPa (65.0 psi +/- 7.25 psi).

Choose a conclusion that best matches your fuel pressure reading.

      Below Specification

      • Go To  4

      Within Proper Specification

      • If directed here by another test, return to that test. Otherwise, test complete.

      Above Specification

  4. CHECK FOR RESTRICTED FUEL SUPPLY LINE
    WARNING:

The fuel system is under a constant pressure even with the engine off. Before testing or servicing any fuel system hose, fitting or line, the fuel system pressure must be released.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Release the pressure in the low fuel system pressure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE, 2.0L or FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE, 2.8L .
    3. Disconnect the Fuel Pressure Gauge.
    4. Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and disconnect the fuel pressure line at the Fuel Pump Module.
    5. Install the Fuel Pressure Gauge between the fuel supply line and the Fuel Pump Module.
    6. Again, purge air from the system.
    7. Turn the ignition on.
    8. Read the Fuel Pressure Gauge and record the reading.

Is the fuel pressure now within proper specification?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  5
        CAUTION:

Stop all actuation tests before proceeding.

  5. CHECKING FUEL INLET STRAINER
    WARNING:

The fuel system is under a constant pressure (even with the engine off). Before testing or servicing any fuel system hose, fitting or line, the fuel system pressure must be released. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Remove the Fuel Pump Module and inspect the Fuel Inlet Strainer.

Is the Fuel Inlet Strainer plugged?

      Yes

      No
