Theory Of Operation
The Alternator contains an Intelligent Voltage Regulator that controls the Alternator overall operation. It communicates with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by means of a LIN BUS communication interface. Unlike traditional regulators, containing a fixed set of parameters and a defined strategy, the Intelligent Voltage Regulator allows changes to these parameters based on messages sent by the PCM. In the event of a fault or loss of communication, the Intelligent Voltage Regulator uses a default set of parameters to allow a recovery solution that allows the Alternator to continue charging without inputs from the PCM.
- The PCM sends the following messages/requests to the regulator:
- Intelligent Voltage Regulator wake-up signal
- Charge rate
- Mechanical load
- Maximum current output based on operating and environmental conditions
- The regulator sends the following information/faults regarding diagnostic and Alternator load conditions to the PCM:
- Alternator duty cycle
- Measured energizing current
- Over temperature error
- Mechanical error
- Electrical error
- Communication error
- Time-out error
