Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs and Freeze Frame Data and record on the repair order.
- Using the recorded Freeze Frame Data and the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Are there any 5-Volt Reference, FTP Sensor, Purge Solenoid or OBD Vent Valve circuit DTCs active or pending?
Yes
- Perform the applicable diagnostic procedure(s). Refer to 2.0L - DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX .
No
- Go To 3
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
- CHECK FOR VACUUM LEAKING THROUGH THE PURGE SOLENOID
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the vacuum line from the outlet port of the Purge Solenoid (this is the line that leads to the Evaporative Canister).
- Connect a vacuum gauge to the outlet port of the Purge Solenoid.
- Start the engine and allow it to idle.
- If the Purge Solenoid is on, disconnect the Purge Solenoid so that it is not running.
- Check for vacuum at the Purge Solenoid outlet port (canister side).
Is engine vacuum present?
Yes
- Replace the Purge Solenoid in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SOLENOID, EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS PURGE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No

- CHECK FOR A PLUGGED OR SEVERELY RESTRICTED ESIM FRESH AIR FILTER NOTE:
A typical symptom of a plugged or severely restricted ESIM Fresh Air Filter would be an early shut off condition during refueling.
NOTE:It is typical for the vacuum created when purging to go below the ESIM vacuum vent regulation point of -500Pa and reach between -600 to -800Pa. A plugged ESIM Fresh Air Filter can cause the vacuum to be much lower during purging.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Reconnect the vacuum line from the outlet port of the Purge Solenoid.
- Start the engine and allow it to run until purging is active. Monitor the vacuum reading on the scan tool until it stabilizes at it's lowest point.
- Turn the engine off.NOTE:
If the vacuum decreases above -500 Pa on the FTP Sensor when the engine is turned off, the vacuum vent is most likely not plugged.
- If the FTP Sensor reading stays substantially below -500 Pa, remove or disconnect the hose for the ESIM Fresh Air Filter while monitoring the FTP Sensor reading. If the reading drops in the target range when the filter is removed from the system, the ESIM Fresh Air Filter is plugged.
Was the Fresh Air Filter determined to be plugged?
Yes
- Replace the ESIM Fresh Air Filter in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- CHECK FOR THE OBD VENT VALVE STICKING CLOSED
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the vacuum line from the OBD Vent Valve (this is the line that leads to the Purge Solenoid).
- Using a hand vacuum pump, apply vacuum to OBD Vent Valve.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Back probe the (K71) Evap Purge Control circuit at the OBD Vent Valve harness connector.
- Energize the OBD Vent Valve by connecting the (K71) Evap Purge Control circuit to ground.NOTE:
The vacuum should purge immediately when the OBD Vent Valve is energized.
Is the vacuum purged immediately when the OBD Vent Valve is energized?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Replace the OBD Vent Valve in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K855) FUEL TANK PRESSURE (FTP) SENSOR 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the FTP Sensor harness connector.
- Disconnect the PCM C1 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the resistance of the (K855) 5-Volt Supply circuit between the FTP harness connector and the PCM C1 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
