Description And Operation
DESCRIPTION
The Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is completely managed by the Antilock Brake System (ABS) module. The system uses the switch placed on the central console and two electro-mechanical actuators, each one installed on the caliper of the rear brake to actuate the parking brake.
NOTE:
Normally, the EPB is engaged automatically when the engine is stopped. This function can be deactivated/activated on the Information and Entertainment system by selecting the following items in sequence on the main menu: "Settings", "Driver Assistance" and "Automatic Parking Brake" .
A button activates and deactivate the parking brake, thus eliminating the conventional parking brake lever/pedal.
Details below:
- If the vehicle is in motion, pull up and hold the EPB switch to engage the parking brake.
- If the vehicle is in motion, the system will use hydraulic pressure as needed to stop the vehicle.
- If the vehicle is stationary, it is only necessary to pull the button upwards once to engage the parking brake. To release the parking brake, press the brake pedal and press the parking brake button downwards.
- The Drive Away Release function automatically releases the electric parking brake if the seat belt is fastened, a gear is engaged and the accelerator is pressed in order to move the vehicle.
- The Safe Hold function, when the vehicle speed is lower than 5 km/h (3 mph), but not in park (in case of an automatic transmission), and the ABS determines that the driver is about to exit the vehicle, the EPB applies the parking brake to stop the vehicle safely.
- The Auto Apply function, when the vehicle speed is lower than approximately 3 km/h (2 mph) and the automatic transmission is set to park, causes the EPB to apply the parking brake automatically.
- In order to perform maintenance on rear calipers or brake pads that perform the EPB function, place the EPB in Maintenance Mode . Maintenance mode may also be accessed through the menu of the info-telematic system "Settings", "Driver Assistance" and "Automatic Parking Brake" .
