Self-Diagnostic System

WARNING: This test is a key on engine off (KOEO) test only that is conducted in park only with emergency brake fully engaged.
NOTE: Only vehicles with an electronic instrument cluster have self-diagnostic capabilities.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Place gear selector in Park. Ensure parking brake is engaged and brake pedal is released. While depressing cruise control switch OFF button, turn ignition switch to RUN position (making sure engine does not start and is not running). CRUISE CONTROL indicator light on instrument cluster will flash once to indicate successful entry into self-diagnostic mode. If CRUISE CONTROL indicator light does not flash, repair system by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If CRUISE CONTROL indicator light flashes once followed by 5 additional flashes, replace defective cruise control servo/actuator. See SERVO/ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Release cruise control switch OFF button. Within 5 seconds of entering self-diagnostics, press cruise control switch ON button. If ON switch is not depressed within five seconds after entering diagnostics mode, module times out and procedure must be started over. Press remaining cruise control buttons in the following sequence: RESUME, COAST and SET/ACCEL. As each button is depressed, CRUISE CONTROL indicator light will flash. Wait until CRUISE CONTROL indicator light goes out to press next button.
  3. After sequence has been completed, CRUISE CONTROL indicator light will flash to indicate STATIC test passed or failed. If CRUISE CONTROL indicator light does not flash with last button and there are no additional flashes of indicator light, cruise control switch is defective. If CRUISE CONTROL indicator light does not flash with last button, and additional flashes occur, follow chart for trouble codes. See FLASH CODE  table. Perform appropriate procedure or test as specified.
  4. Immediately after static test has passed, actuator performs a dynamic test by automatically operating throttle .31-.40" (8-10 mm). Observe throttle movement to witness any sticking of cable or linkage. Ensure throttle returns properly. If throttle does not move, go to TEST H: NO DYNAMIC PULL OCCURS AT THROTTLE DURING SELF TEST  under SYSTEM TESTS. If self-diagnostics does not pinpoint fault, repair system by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
