- CHECK THE FUSED ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Ignition Coil harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With a scan tool, actuate the ASD Relay.
- With a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the Fused ASD Relay Output circuit at the Ignition Coil harness connector.
Is the test light illuminated and bright?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Repair the Fused ASD Relay Output circuit for an open or short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST
.NOTE:
Stop All Actuations.
- CHECK THE IGNITION COIL CONTROL CIRCUIT OPERATION WARNING:
When the engine is operating, do not stand in direct line with the fan. Do not put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. Do not wear loose clothing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With a 12-volt test light connected to a 12 volt source, probe the (K18) Coil Control 3 circuit at the Ignition Coil harness connector.
- Crank the engine for 5.0 seconds while observing the test light.
What is the condition of the test light while cranking the engine?
Brightly blinking

- CHECK THE (K18) COIL CONTROL 3 CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Ignition Control Module (ICM) C2 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (K18) Coil Control 3 circuit between the Ignition Coil harness connector and the ICM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (K18) Coil Control 3 circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECKING FOR THE CAUSE OF THIS DTC SETTING NOTE:
An internally shorted or damaged Ignition Coil can cause an internal ICM coil driver failure. Do not replace the ICM without first determining if the Ignition Coil is the cause of the failure.
- Remove the Ignition Coil that is controlled by the coil driver setting the DTC.
- Install the Ignition Coil onto another coil location that did not have a DTC set against it.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Start the engine and allow it to idle for up to one minute.NOTE:
If the engine will not start, crank the engine three times for 10 seconds.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Did a correlating fault set for the new Ignition Coil location?
Yes
- Replace the Ignition Coil in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to COIL, IGNITION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Replace and program the Ignition Control Module in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
