Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, read Powertrain Control Module 2 (PCM-2) DTCs and Freeze Frame Data and record on the repair order.
    3. Using the recorded Freeze Frame Data and the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.

Is the DTC active or pending?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

      • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
        NOTE:

If the P2100 is intermittent, it is possible that Low battery voltage is causing excessive current draw, in very hot or very cold ambient temperatures and this is considered a normal protection operation. No repair is necessary.

  2. CHECK FOR THE ETC MOTOR CIRCUITS SHORTED TO 12 VOLTS
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, actuate the Throttle Follower Test.
    3. Slowly press and release the Accelerator Pedal while monitoring the voltage.
    4. Back probe and measure the voltage on the (K920) ETC Motor (+) circuit at the Throttle Body 2 harness connector.
    5. Back probe and measure the voltage on the (K927) ETC Motor (-) circuit at the Throttle Body 2 harness connector.
      NOTE:

The voltage reading should change as the valve position is changed. A reading that stays at 12 volts would indicate a short to voltage.

Is the voltage reading steady at 12 volts for either circuit?

      Yes

      • Repair the (K920) ETC Motor (+) circuit or (K927) ETC Motor (-) circuit for a short to voltage.
        NOTE:

A short to voltage on the motor circuits can damage the internal H-Bridge driver of the PCM and cause it to be open. After repairing the short to voltage, verify that the PCM was not damaged.

Go To the appropriate diagnostic information.

      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY AND RETEST FOR DTCS
    1. Replace the Throttle Body 2 in accordance with the Service Information. Injection/THROTTLE BODY/Removal and Installation) . Disconnect the Battery when replacing the Throttle Body 2 Assembly. After installation is complete, use a scan tool and select the ETC RELEARN function.
    2. Connect the Throttle Body 2 and PCM harness connectors.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    5. Using the Freeze Frame Data or When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle within the conditions that set the DTC.
    6. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes

      • Go To  4

      No

      • Replacing the Throttle Body 2 Assembly repaired the fault.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  4. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
    1. Disconnect all PCM-2 harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all PCM-2 harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes

      No

      • The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
